Nascida em Baltimore, uma mulher livre e negra, em 1825, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper foi uma poetisa abolicionista ativa no século XIX e início do século XX. Como palestrante itinerante da Sociedade Americana Antiescravista, Harper lutou pela emancipação dos escravizados antes da Guerra Civil Americana e, posteriormente, trabalhou no Sul como professora durante a Reconstrução.
