Dans Behind That Curtain, publié en 1928, Charlie Chan se trouve à San Francisco, prêt à rentrer à Honolulu après un séjour de travail. Il rencontre Sir Frederic Bruce, de Scotland Yard, qui suit la trace d’une femme disparue quinze ans plus tôt. Ils se rendent ensemble à un dîner, où Sir Frederic est assassiné.

Chan est alors pressé de retarder son retour à Hawaï pour participer à l’enquête. Avant de retrouver le meurtrier, Charlie doit retrouver la femme disparue. Le précédent roman de Chan, The Chinese Parrot, ayant été si bien accueilli, Earl Derr Biggers a reçu la somme impressionnante de 25 000 dollars pour une version feuilletonnée de Behind That Curtain par le Saturday Evening Post. Le roman a été adapté au cinéma en 1929.
