De plot ontwikkelt zich terwijl de revolutionairen strijden tegen de regering en terwijl De Gadfly worstelt met een mysterieuze haat jegens de kerk en een zekere kardinaal. De roman, met zijn complexe thema’s loyaliteit, romantiek, revolutie en strijd tegen zowel het establishment als religie, was destijds zeer populair, zowel in zijn geboorteland Ierland als in andere landen zoals Rusland en China.

In Rusland was het boek zo populair dat het verplichte kost werd. Sinds de publicatie is het ook bewerkt tot film, opera, theater en ballet, en zijn populariteit spoorde Voynich aan tot het schrijven van sequels en prequels.
