La controversia sui Nature Fakers, chiamata anche “Guerra dei Naturalisti”, fu un dibattito americano dei primi del XX secolo tra sentimentalismo e accuratezza nella scrittura naturalistica. La controversia ebbe inizio nel 1903 quando il naturalista e scrittore John Burroughs pubblicò il suo articolo “Real and Sham Natural History” su The Atlantic Monthly, attaccando duramente i popolari scrittori naturalistici per le loro rappresentazioni eccessivamente antropomorfiche della fauna selvatica e denunciando il genere della narrativa naturalistica realistica come “giornalismo giallo dei boschi”.

Robert Williams Wood, ispirato dalla controversia sui Nature Fakers, pubblicò “How to Tell the Birds from the Flowers: A Manual of Flornithology for Beginners” nel 1907, seguito da “Animal Analogues” nel 1908. I libri raccolgono poesie illustrate che confrontano piante e animali con nomi simili, satireggiando lo stile disinformato e antropomorfizzato della scrittura naturalistica.

La controversia sui Nature Fakers è citata in modo più esplicito nella sua poesia “The Yellow-hammer; The Saw-fish”. Nel 1917, i libri furono riuniti in “How to Tell the Birds from the Flowers and Other Woodcuts: A Revised Manual of Flornithology for Beginners”. L’edizione riveduta includeva due nuove poesie, ne rimuoveva quattro da “Animal Analogues” e ne rivedeva il testo e le illustrazioni di molte altre.
