Orthodoxie is G.K. Chestertons antwoord op de bewering van zijn critici dat zijn eerdere essaybundel, Heretics, “slechts de huidige filosofieën had bekritiseerd zonder een alternatieve filosofie te bieden.” Tijdens zijn intellectuele reis van heidens naar agnostisch naar positivistisch filosoof had hij geprobeerd een filosofie te construeren “die zo’n tien minuten vóór de waarheid was.” Maar toen hij zijn moderne filosofie vergeleek met de christelijke theologie, realiseerde hij zich dat hij “de man was die met de grootste durf ontdekte wat al eerder was ontdekt.” Orthodoxie is dus een werk van christelijke apologetiek, waarin Chesterton probeert aan te tonen dat het christendom een universeel antwoord is op de alledaagse behoeften van de mensheid, en niet slechts een willekeurige filosofie die van bovenaf is doorgegeven.
