WB Yeats speelde vele rollen in Ierland aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw: toneelschrijver, essayist, criticus, mysticus, theatermanager, revolutionair en politicus. Maar hij was in de eerste plaats dichter – misschien wel de beroemdste dichter die Ierland tot nu toe heeft voortgebracht. Deze bundel bevat Yeats’ verzen uit zijn eerste gepubliceerde gedicht, “Song of the Fairies”, dat in 1885 in een literair tijdschrift in Dublin verscheen, tot en met The Tower uit 1928. In deze verzen kan de lezer de ontwikkeling van de dichters stem en de invloeden op zijn werk volgen, van Iers nationalisme tot esoterische metafysica.

Hieronder vallen enkele van Yeats’ meest blijvend populaire werken: “The Second Coming”, “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” en “The Wild Swans at Coole”.
